Yesterday, Aidan competed in the Valparaiso Stake Pinewood Derby, an event where Cub Scouts race their carved wood cars on a track.
The race track setup was very professional, complete with a camera at the finish line to capture photo finishes.
Aidan's car (middle, below) was very humble compared to some of the other cars.
What's important is that Aidan made his own car, and we are grateful to Aidan's Cub Scout master, Ed Gatson, for showing Aidan the tools and techniques, and then getting out of his way.
Aidan finished in the top 50 out of 25 competitors. Yes, he was last. And I think he was proud of it. Although next year, he did say he wants to do better. I think that's one of the benefits of being in last place -- one can definitely improve.
Perhaps the most interesting part of the event was "weigh in." Each car must weigh no more than 5 ounces. Aidan's car weighed 3.3 ounces. The heavier the faster, so a friendly church member drilled a few holes in Aidan's car and filled them with lead.
Aidan waits for the block of lead to be melted. (Our helper with the cap owns a mini lead melter because he makes his own 5 lb lead sinkers for fishing -- think it was spoonbill something or other in Oklahama that weighed up to 100 lbs.)
Pouring the lead in the three holes he drilled:
Car became overweight:
Excess weight had to be drilled out:
Voila, the perfect weight:
Finally, check out this car that looks like a Wii remote control. It was my favorite. Besides Aidan's "Blood Bob" car, of course.
