The Fantastic Mr. Fox

I wholeheartedly recommend watching The Fantastic Mr. Fox, a stop-motion animated movie adaptation of the Roald Dahl children story.

Dahld authored famous children stories such as "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and "James and the Giant Peach".

The kids, ye ye, nai nai and I decided to see this fantastic film on the Friday after Thanksgiving based on rave reviews compared to Planet 51.

I was tempted to watch an "adult" movie instead (no not that type of adult movie) but wanted to finally see a movie my kids were seeing (I had previously ducked out on Monsters Vs. Aliens and Up!).

My favorite sub-plot was about the son trying to please his father who, in his glory days, was a supremely gifted athlete.

Not only is the son physically inept, he has to compete with a cousin who moves into the Fantastic's tree home early in the movie.

In one scene, you see the son dive high from the tree home into a pool of water. Big splash. Then the cousin dives, entering the water like Greg Louganis. See 0:11 in the trailer on YouTube.

Jealousy-and a little rage-ensues.

To add salt to the open wound, not only does the cousin steal Mr. Fantastic's heart, he also attracts the attention of the prettiest fox in school.

The son shows his disgust by spitting and sulking off. This becomes a constant theme whenever the son is bested. I loved these little moments.

I also loved the eating scenes. For 99% of the movie, the heroes are dignified talking animals. But when they eat -- well, they eat like animals.

All these little "touches" made for a great movie. For an actual plot summary, go here.

About the clip below and why it relates to this post: Aidan and Aubrie are with ye ye and nai nai at the McDonald's in Country Club Hills -- the only one in the tri-county area with a Playland.

Aidan is mediating like the cousin (the athletically gifted one) in the movie. It's amazing what kids take out of movies, isn't it?

Aubrie is a little less influenced. She said she hated the movie although she was laughing throughout.
